Southern
Freight, Inc. (SFI) was established in 1980 as an LTL (Less Than
Truckload) carrier serving Georgia and Florida. Few LTL carriers marketed
their services to Florida nor made any attempt to build business in these
lanes. SFI offered an extraordinary service to a state that had little
except sunshine as a back haul product. The SFI operation grew at a
phenomenal rate and set standards for service to Florida.
SFI was founded by Robert J. Fauls, Jr. With his keen
insight and leadership, Fauls turned SFI into a success story during the
1980's and 1990's. Fauls began to see the Florida market become saturated
with other LTL carriers and prices began to erode. Many of the major LTL
carriers decided to serve Florida, some even trying to emulate SFI's
success. Eventually, the LTL division of SFI was sold to Goggin Truck
Line.
In 1990, SFI ventured into non-asset based truckload
business by opening Southern Cargo Services and became a leader as a
third party logistics provider, partnering with over 5,000 carriers all
across the U.S.
Custom Transport, Knowles Trucking and Mountain View
Express were purchased to increase SFI's presence in the truckload
carrier market. These truckload carriers provide service between the
southeast and west and central states.
Today theses operations have been merged into one company:
Southern Freight.
What began as a two-truck operation in 1980, is today a
company with 150 power units and 300 trailers. SFI employs 250 people and
has another 25 contract employees. It has an extensive service network
providing superior truckload transportation in regional and longhaul
markets.
Today, SFI recognizes the tremendous opportunity for
quality, service-driven truckload and third party logistics services. The
partners and employees of SFI operate on the premise that SFI must
provide solutions to transportation challenges with better service at a
fair price.
